"One should not miss Toye's 'Banana Jazz Hop.' This is, simply put, the late-night side of cool.
A near-dawn cab ride through the rain-splattered city streets. A Mitsubishi commercial waiting to happen.
Everything a hipster needs to maintain image (rectangular glasses included)." review by Bill Campbell taken from ink19.com |

"Toronto based DJ / producer Toye aka James McLean has put together a superb collection
of songs that would be at home on labels like Mo' Wax and Ninja Tune. Rather than being
sample based, it seems that Toye's tracks are constructed exclusively from synthesizers,
drum machines and computers. What struck me from the get go was McLean's ability to
create a jazzy, meditative trip hop sound that was extremely technical and abstract,
abstraction that flows! There are also touches of consciousness, exemplified by the
Noam Chompsky samples on Snowflake. Many Parts Make A Whole, as an album, is arranged in
such a way that the first few tracks are more technical and pronounced, slowly giving way to
more dubby, subtle music before arousing active listening with the last couple of songs; this
structure is nothing short of brilliant. I predict very nice things from Toye." Reviewed by Stinky Marinky aka DJ Machine - www.ghettosystem.com |

"The set starts with a long ambient section constructed of mangled samples from nature, various ethnic musics and synth drones. After a few minutes,
chopped-up processed breakbeats bubble up from under the drones and big dubby bass pulses
start throbbing. On paper, this doesn't sound that different from the rest of the
ethno-electronica out there, but Telefunk's approach is much more experimental, and
the ethnic samples get mangled until they become abstract synth noises instead of just token references." Reviewed by Ben Boles - www.nowtoronto.com |
